Darlene was the seventh of eight children born to her parents, Maude and John Chaffin of Tioga, Texas. She attended Tioga Public Schools and North Texas State University, where she graduated at age 19 with a BBA degree. While at the University, she met Howard Lucas on a blind date. After graduation, they married at the Little Chapel in the Woods on February 14, 1947, and began 56 wonderful years together.
Darlene and Howard moved from Levelland, Texas to Jackson in 1985. She taught school for 44 years, including 12 years at Jackson Academy. When the love of her life passed away in 2003, she moved to St. Catherine’s Village, where she spent many happy years.
Darlene enjoyed traveling, reading, playing bridge, and being with her friends. She involved herself in the activities at St. Catherine’s Village, but found her greatest pleasure in her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Meadowbrook Church of Christ.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Howard Milton Lucas; her sister Velma Willett; her brothers Johnnie Chaffin, L.S. Chaffin, Doyle Chaffin, Cloyce Chaffin, and Clyde Chaffin. She is survived by her two children: Timothy Lucas and wife Melody Lucas of Coppell, Texas and Dr. Phillip Lucas and wife Marcia Lucas of Madison; four grandchildren: Amanda Scott and husband Sidney of Madison; Melinda Peevy and husband Jason Peevy of Birmingham, Alabama; Nathan Lucas and wife Amanda Lucas of Madison; and Shaley Lucas of Dallas, Texas; and five great-grandchildren: Logan Scott and Walker Scott of Madison; Lucas Peevy and Andrew Peevy of Birmingham, Alabama; and Eleanor Lucas of Madison; and sister Rita Doak of Nacagadoches, Texas.
Darlene led a life of example. She taught her family to be generous; to value everyone as children of God; to be faithful followers of Christ; to value family relationships; and she demonstrated how to deal with adversity and pain with grace and courage.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Meadowbrook Church of Christ or to the charity of your choosing.
