Dan M. Lee, 84, Retired Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court left this life Sunday, May 9, 2010 at St. Catherine’s Village. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 pm May 11, 2010 and 10am Wednesday with funeral services at 11:00 am Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Wright and Ferguson on Highland Colony Parkway. Burial wiil be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Judge Lee served on the Mississippi Supreme Court from 1982 to 1998. Prior to his election to the Supreme Court, he served the state as a county judge and a circuit judge.
Judge Lee was known for his warm demeanor and readiness to help others. He was born in Forest County in 1926 to Buford Aaron Lee, Sr. and Pherbia Anna Camp Lee, one of seven children. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. Each of his five brothers also served in the US Military in World War II or in the Korean Conflict. Judge Lee was a pilot, a passion he that first ignited when he served on the aircraft carrier, the USS Princeton. He owned and piloted his own plane for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Buford Aaron Lee, Jr., Robert Roe Lee, and Oscar Columbus Lee and first wife, Peggy Jo Daniel Lee.
He is survived by: wife of fifty-four years, Mary Alice Gray Lee, son Daniel McKinnon Lee, Jr. and wife, Kathy and daughter, Sheron Lee Anderson, and husband Charles (Mike), five grand children, Peggy Smith, Charles W. Anderson, IV, Faith Tucker, Matthew Lee and Michael Lee, eight great grandchildren, two brothers, Billy Howell Lee and James Phillip Lee, sister Shirley Hegwood Polk Lee and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family request that memorials be made to the Judge Dan M. Lee endowed scholarship fund at Mississippi College School of Law.
