Mr. Paine was born in Charleston, Mississippi on May 27, 1921 to Mattie Kelley Paine and Joseph Dennis Paine whom he always remembered loved him dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Catherine Bondy Paine of Madison, Mississippi. He is also survived by his son, Charles Joseph Paine, M.D., his wife, Kathleen Phillips Paine, both of Shreveport, Louisiana, and their children: Kelley, Stephen and Catherine; his son, Thomas David Paine, M.D., his wife, Sharon Freeman Paine, both of Lillian, Alabama and their children: Chris and Meg; his daughter, Catherine Courtney Paine Snider, Esq. of Madison, Mississippi and her children: Christian, Justin, Ben and Corban; his sister, Mary Lea Paine McNutt, her husband, Donald Fredrick McNutt, both of Cheneyville, Louisiana and their children: Patricia and Anne.
Charlie was raised in Cheneyville, Louisiana and graduated in 1942 from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
He was extremely proud of the opportunity afforded him to serve his country twice – first, as a Captain in the United States Army Corps of Engineers where he served as a Company Commander in the Pacific Theatre on Saipan and Okinawa during World War II and, again, during the Korean Conflict, as a Major and Commander of a Engineering Construction Battalion.
Following his military service, Charlie joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1946 where he was employed for over 40 years in Cleveland, Ohio; New Orleans, Shreveport and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and in Atlanta, Georgia where he first served as Southeastern Regional Manager for Electric Utility Sales. In 1978, he was awarded the Westinghouse Order of Merit, the highest honor given to an employee by the Corporation in recognition of individual achievement. In 1979, he was elected Vice President, Southeastern Region and served in that capacity in until his retirement in 1986.
While living in Atlanta, Charlie was very active in the community where he served as Chairman of the Board of North Springs United Methodist Church, as a member of the Business Council of Georgia, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Central Atlanta Progress, the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering Advisory Council, the Florida Council of 100 and as a Trustee of Southern Tech Foundation.
Charlie and Cappy then moved to Jackson, Mississippi to be nearer to their children and grandchildren. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Country Club of Jackson and working their acreage in Madison. Charlie and Cappy are members of Madison United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home located on Highland Colony Parkway from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 and from 1:00pm until the 2:00pm funeral service on Thursday, March 22, 2012.
Graveside services will be 11:00am Saturday March 24, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Cheneyville, Louisiana.
