Bill attended Thomas Jefferson High School (class of '55) and University of Richmond (B.A. in Economics '59 and M.A. in Commerce '70). After receiving his undergraduate degree, he worked as a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve before leaving to fulfill his ROTC commitment. In 1973 he was conferred the designation of Charted Financial Analyst. He left Wheat to become Managing Partner at the Capital Management Corporation from which he retired in 2003.
Bill stayed busy in retirement, giving generously of his time and expertise to many organizations, friends, and clients who refused to let him retire. He was a 25 plus year volunteer at the Science Museum of Virginia; Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Nature Foundation at Wintergreen; President of the Richmond Torch Club; board member of the Shepherd's Center of Richmond; member of ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out); and active in the United Way, serving as chairman of the Human Service Planning Division.
Bill was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond where he served as a deacon, elder, and treasurer of the FPC Endowment Fund. Through the church, Bill was actively involved in many clean water and medical mission trips to Nicaragua. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 3 at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Living Waters for the World (livingwatersfortheworld.org) or The First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund (fpcrichmond.org).
