Parker, Virginia Richardson, age 95, widow of Joseph Edward Parker, died February 3, 2012. A native of James City County, she was the daughter of the late Philip Hankins and Helen Potts Richardson. She attended James City Schools and Mary Washington College. After graduating from Mary Washington College, she taught elementary school in New Kent County for two years. She married Mr. Parker in 1938, retiring from teaching to become a full time homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, golf and caring for her family. As "empty-nesters", they both enjoyed wintering in Naples, Florida.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Parker Featherston and one son, Joseph Edward Parker, Jr. and his wife Sharon Welton Parker; five grandchildren, Spencer Featherston Kirkmyer and her husband John Conroy Kirkmyer of Irvington, Virginia, Conway Parker Peek of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Charles Aubrey Featherston III and his wife Catherine Neurohr Featherston, Joseph Edward Parker III and his wife Stephanie Smith Parker all of Richmond and Anne Robertson Parker Starke and her husband McKeen Starke of Singapore; and by eleven great grandchildren, Ford and Parker Kirkmyer, Mercer and Hardt Peek, Ginnie and Ellie Featherston, Joe, Will and Charlie Parker and Mary McKeen and Thomas Starke. She is also survived by one sister; Helen Kidder Richardson Gills of Richmond and a brother Philip Oliver Richardson of Williamsburg.
Mrs. Parker was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Club, Fifty-Fivers Golf Association, the Country Club of Virginia and Royal Poinciana Country Club in Naples, Florida. She joined Tabernacle Methodist church as a young girl, but after her marriage joined Sandston Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Women of the Church, including serving as president of that organization. In 1960, shortly after moving to Richmond, she and her family joined River Road Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m. at River Road Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.
