NEWTON, Virginia, “don’t call me Elva,” passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of April 23, 2017, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Nelson Newton; her brothers, Dave Baldwin and Bill Baldwin; her sister, Myrtle Carelock; her son, Leslie Earl Newton; and her granddaughter, Anne Newton Whisnant. She is survived by her sons, Nelson Newton and Craig Newton (Erika); her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Vass Newton; grandchildren, Joey Newton and Virginia Newton; her step granddaughter, Anna Vaden; and her great-granddaughter, Whitney Whisnant Velez (Josh).
Virginia lived her life with an unmatched politeness and caring for others, perfectly coupled with her wit. Some who knew her well might even call her “feisty.” She embodied these personality traits (traits that would be conflicting in anyone else) throughout her years working as a Henrico School Cafeteria Manager, as a mother to her children, and as a grandma to her grandchildren (and their friend, Meghan Anderson). Thankfully, she was herself until the very end.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229. Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Virginia’s memory to the church.
