Stephen Clark Davis, 86, went to be with the Lord on November 12, 2024, while surrounded by his family at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Clark (Stevie) Davis, Jr., his parents Thomas Hall Davis, Jr., and Winifred Margaret Clark Davis, and a sister Winifred Margaret (Susie) Davis Dunford.
He is survived by two children, Ann Elizabeth (Beth) Davis Hargett (Greg) of Richmond, VA, and Michael Christopher (Chris) Davis of Richmond, VA. Stephen is also survived by five grandchildren: Ashleigh Nicole Davis of Portland, Oregon, Lauren Elizabeth Aughenbaugh (Andrew Kirchmaier) of Richmond, VA, Matthew Stephen Pigg (Rachelle) of Richmond VA, Alyssa Katheryn Magill (Joshua) of Richmond, VA and Michaela Skye Davis (Spencer Murray) of Rustburg, VA. He is survived by five great-grandchildren: Camden Lee Aughenbaugh, Sadie Aileen Magill, Kamryn Nicole Murray, Westlyn Grace Murray, Benjamin Thomas Magill, and a great-grandchild Murray on the way. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas Hall Davis Ill of Everett, Ontario, Canada and a sister, Diana Elizabeth (Peachie) Davis Glaubke of Cincinnati, Ohio as well as many nieces and nephews.
Born in Washington, D.C. on December 12, 1937, Stephen grew up in Portsmouth, VA where he had a paper route from the age of eight. After graduating from Churchland High School he attended Bridgewater College for his undergraduate degree in History and Political Science with a minor in Sociology. He then attended the University of Virginia where he completed his graduate degree. After graduation from Bridgewater College he entered the Coast Guard reserves from 1959-1966 when he was honorably discharged. Stephen began his teaching career in 1961 at Nelson County High School. Throughout his career there he taught World History and Government and he was much loved by both his students and colleagues. He was also a track coach for many years, coaching boys in hurdles. He was a hurdler in high school and college, lettering at both levels. He taught at Nelson County High School for 30 years, retiring early in 1991 though he continued teaching summer school after that.
Stephen was a member of the Episcopal Church. His faith was very important to him and it showed in his dealings with family, friends, and acquaintances. His faith always brought him through the difficult times. Stephen was a very dedicated Dad, Granddad, and Great-Granddad. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as Papa Davis. He never knew a stranger.
The funeral will be held on December 10th at 3 P.M. at Woody Funeral Home on Parham Rd. in Henrico, VA. Visitation will be held one hour prior at 2 P.M. Interment will be on December 11th at 2:00 P.M. at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk, VA
