Shirley Anne Mays DeMarco, age 86, died Saturday, October 15, 2016. She was born January 7, 1930 in Richmond, Virginia to John Davidson Mays and Thelma Lillian Stewart Mays. She was the widow of Dominick DeMarco, Sr. She is lovingly remembered and survived by her children: Linda Marie DeMarco Robertson and husband Gary; Nancy Denise DeMarco Hall and husband Tom; Dominick DeMarco, Jr. and wife Elaine and their son Dominick DeMarco III (Nicky); and Susan Anne DeMarco. Her eldest grandson, Jeffrey Scott Robertson, predeceased her. Also surviving are her sister Joyce Mays Scott and husband Warner, and their children Janet, Karen, Beth and their families. She was a proud 1947 graduate of John Marshall High School and treasured her years of learning there among worthy fellow students and wonderful teachers. In her youth, she sang on WRNL and WRVA radio with her best friend Ruth Lane. Her love of music and playing her piano were a lifelong passion. She retired after 30 years from the Federal Aviation Administration where she met and worked with many interesting people involved in aviation including pilots and mechanics. She lovingly pursued her family genealogy and took great pride in her many knitted, crocheted and embroidery projects. She was an avid reader especially of biographies and local Virginia history and enjoyed reading each page of the newspaper every day. She took much satisfaction from her intricate coloring books, collecting beautiful vintage china, and spent many hours in the yard nurturing her flowers when she was able. She took great joy caring for her pets who loved her including her devoted Dalmatian Dillon and cat NipNip. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mom’s dedicated caregivers Peggy, Darlene and Audrey for their years of loving care and devotion. Visitation with the family will be from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Tuesday October 18, 2016 at Nelsen Funeral Home, Laburnum Avenue.
