Robert Mahone Martin “Bub” found peace in Christ’s arms May 6, 2022, after a brief but valiant battle with soft tissue sarcoma. Robert was born November 6, 1955 in Richmond, VA to Jean K. and William J. Martin Jr., who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife Irene “Scottie” Lowry Martin, sister Janis Rose (Jim), brother James, aunt Janis K. Lively, and two crazy pups, Ruby and Pearl, as well as extended family and many friends. Robert graduated from Highland Springs High School in 1975, where he played football, ran track, and played in the band and upon graduating, attended VCU. He returned to the Springs in 1979 to begin his 21 year career as Campus Duty Assistant but more importantly, as a football and wrestling coach. During this time, lifelong friendships were formed. Robert was funny, witty, and loved a good debate about anything. He met his future wife in 1991 and married in 1998. In that time, they traveled to several NFL football stadiums, the most memorable being his beloved Packers’ Lambeau Field for his 50th birthday. He loved all things football, scotch, and professional wrestling, not necessarily in that order. He lived a full life, his way.
A Celebration of his Life will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 1pm in the Hill Building at Sandston Pool, 501 Beulah Road, Sandston VA 23150, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Highland Springs Football Alumni Association, P.O. Box 28523, Henrico, VA 23228, or your local animal shelter.
In life, Robert would hold his drink high as he left a gathering saying “I’m Out!!” Please do the same in his memory.
