Patricia Chandler Smith, 84, won her battle with dementia on Sunday, November 12,2023. She was born September 18,1939 to O. Allen Chandler and Marie O’Leary Chandler in Richmond, VA. She was a Highland Springs graduate, and attended both University of Richmond and RPI. In August 1962, she married the love of her life, Marvin G Smith, and moved to Barboursville, WV where they raised a family. Pat was a registered cytotechnologist, and worked professionally in both Huntington, WV and Richmond VA, eventually retiring from LabCorp in 2005.
In addition to her professional career, she led a life of service. Some of her volunteer passions were Cub Scouts of America, Davis Creek PTA, American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald houses in Richmond and Huntington, and Election Day Poll workers in both cities as well. She also loved to participate in the Women’s Club of Huntington and the Order of the Eastern Star, Montrose Chapter. One of her greatest passions was church, where she was a faithful member of the hand bell choir, as well as a Children’s Sunday school teacher for over 40 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard A. Chandler, as well as her husband of 28 years, Marvin G. Smith. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Chris and Nell Smith and Andrew and Julie Smith, all of Richmond. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Grace O. Smith of Richmond, and 2nd Lt. Zachary Smith of Ft Novosel, Alabama. Also surviving are her grand dogs Gus and Lola, and a host of family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Visiting Angels and Spring Arbor Cottages for their love and care for Pat over the past two years.
The Order of the Eastern Star will perform rites on Monday November 20, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. followed by a public visitation until 7:00 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home Parham Chapel, 1776 N. Parham Rd, Richmond, VA 23229.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 21, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, Henrico, VA 23229 where she was a faithful member. The service will be live-streamed through www.trinityumc.net. Graveside services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Capital Campaign, to support the renovations of the Children’s Education Wing, or your local Ronald McDonald House.
