On Saturday, July 22nd, 2023, Maxine Doherty Winn, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, was called Home at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Henry V. Winn, Jr.
Maxine was born on a chilly 16th of December in 1925 to Frank Joseph, Sr. and Marion Loyce Doherty. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Maxine attended Thomas Jefferson High School and spent her early adulthood in the secretarial field before devoting her life to her family and her beautiful garden.
Maxine was a decorated member of the Salisbury Garden Club for many years, renowned for her beautiful floral arrangements that brought color and joy to her community.
Maxine’s love of nature extended far past her garden; she loved spending crisp fall days in the mountains and warm sunny stretches at the beach. In her later years, Maxine developed an incomparable bond with her dog, Gigi (the two were known to share the occasional waffle for breakfast and go to bed upon Gigi’s say so).
Maxine would likely say that her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to four amazing children; David (Leah), Peggi, Carol (Julian) and Chris. As a wife and mother, Maxine kept their home warm, their hearts full, and their holidays special and bright. Maxine was a loving and selfless mother who always put the needs of her family first.
Maxine was also a caring grandmother to her grandchildren Caitlyn, Cristin, Andy and Sarah who referred to her lovingly as Mimi. Mimi even got to meet her great granddaughter, Olivia, the firstborn of Caitlyn and her husband, Nicholas.
Maxine was never short a quick quip or a warm smile and she was generous with her faith and twinkling laugh, and a joy to be around. She is survived by her brother and sister, Frank Doherty, Jr. (Terry) and Margaret Ann Kelly (Peter), her children, her grandchildren, her great granddaughter, her nieces Nancy, Sharon, Laurie and Cathy and her nephews Michael K., Michael D., Sean, Craige and Marshall. Though she has passed, she will surely live on in the memories, stories, and laughter that they were lucky enough to share with her.
A viewing will be held for family and friends on Friday, July, 28th from 5-7pm at Woody’s Funeral Home (Parham) and a Catholic service will follow on Saturday, July, 29th at St. Edwards Chapel at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association.
