Born on November 21, 1934, she was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Anna Phillips; her husband, John Worrell; and her sisters, Nan Alsko, Kay Haurand, and Jaye Alsko. She is survived by her sisters, Helen Bury of Washington, PA, and Penny Adams of Umatilla, FL; and sister-in-law, Libby Worrell of Richmond. Mary was loved and treasured by her many nieces and nephews.
Mary graduated from Washington High School in Washington, PA, but also spent her junior year at Highland Springs High School in Sandston, VA. She played softball and basketball and also coached her niece’s basketball team at St. Elizabeth’s School in Richmond. Sports of all kind were her passion, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins along with Pitt, Penn State, Notre Dame, and the Boston Celtics. Along with following sports, she watched every Hallmark Christmas movie ever produced, Perry Mason, and any (and all) western movies or TV series.
After high school, Mary lived in Aiken, SC; Richmond, VA; Tewksbury, MA; and Lowell, MA before finally returning and settling in Richmond in 1976. She was an Executive Assistant for many years at Lowell Day Nursery in MA and at the Virginia Trucking Association in Richmond. She was always the consummate professional, dedicated to her job. She enjoyed being with her extended family and friends while being fiercely independent. Always quick to laugh and joke, she could lighten any situation quickly and effortlessly.
It will probably take years to get her name removed from the many and varied charities to which she made donations. From the military to animals to children to fighting diseases, she always found a few dollars to send to support them. Please choose a favorite charity of your own and make a donation in Mary’s memory.
Per Mary's direction, her family will inter her ashes beside her husband in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, Va. at a later date this spring.
