PERKINS, MARTHA CASSTEVENS,81, of Henrico County, died peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on December 26, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Pearl Casstevens, and her infant son, Robert Vance Perkins. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Robert (Bob) V. Perkins, Jr. DDS; two daughters, Kimberly P. Johnson (Robbie) and Andrea P. Hogan (Larry); two stepsons, Robert V. Perkins, III and Russell W. Perkins (Debbie); ten grandchildren, including her twin granddaughters, Mary Lacen and Martha Hope Kinkel, who were the light of her life and to whom she was devoted; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Martha was born in Lexington, North Carolina. She was one of ten
children and is survived by siblings Bill Casstevens (Lea), Mary C. Scott, John Casstevens (Gayle) and Mike Casstevens. Martha graduated from Blackstone High School in Blackstone, Virginia. She then moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she became an RN in 1957 after completing studies at Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for several years as an operating room nurse. Martha and Bob moved in the 1960s to a home on Patterson Avenue in the City of Richmond, where Martha raised the family and oversaw Bob’s dental practice, which he operated out of their home. Martha and Bob are lifetime members of Westwood Club, where Kim swam and Andrea played tennis. She also served as a director for tennis tournaments held at
Westwood Club and in the greater Richmond area. Martha loved to read, play piano and spend time at the beach. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, and she was a steadfast friend to many. We will miss her sense of humor, her quick wit and her keen and inquiring mind. More than anything, we will miss the joy she brought to our lives. The family would like to acknowledge the kindness, support and professionalism of the skilled doctors, nurses and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, who tended to Martha during her weeks there: the 2nd Floor Medical Surgical Unit, the CCICU, the CVICU. Special thanks also to Drs. Appleton, Bladergroen, Fiser and Shindel, who provided not only excellent medical care but who also deftly and graciously guided the family through a very difficult period. And to Cliff Outlaw, Environmental Services Floor Tech, in whom Martha found a kindred caregiver spirit. A private interment service will be held at Westhampton Memorial and Cremation Park. Her life will be celebrated on February 2, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Westwood Club, 6200 W. Club Lane, Richmond, VA 23226.
