Marriott Henry Jackson, of Richmond, Virginia went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the early morning hours of Christmas Day, Dec. 25, after a brave battle with cancer. She was born December 29, 1931 in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., the only child of her beloved parents, Matthew and Inez Henry. She grew up in the Ginter Park neighborhood of Richmond and after her marriage raised her family in Sleepy Hollow. Marriott was preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel Wilson Jackson, in 2015, as well as her very best friend of more than 60 years, Mary Barnett of Norfolk, Va. She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Jeanine Jackson (Porter Raper) and Julie Strange (Anthony Strange); four granddaughters, Ashley Strange, Corrie Hughes (Joshua), Carson Smith (Brantley), and Emma Raper. In addition, Marriott was the proud and loving great-grandmother of Madison, Piper, and Noah.
Marriott attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and graduated from Hollins College in 1952.
Marriott was devoted to her church of over 40 years, Third Church, formerly Third Presbyterian, and sang in the choir for many years. She was active also with Young Life. Her faith grew through this ministry as she was so inspired by the young adults who helped take the Faith she already had to a more personal relationship with Jesus. Marriott was a life-long member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) and she loved her “sisters” there. She also volunteered and served on the Board of The Virginia Home for decades. She was active in The Tuckahoe Women’s Club and was a former member of The Council of The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Marriott loved traveling with her husband, family, and friends. In 2016, which would be the last time she would travel, Marriott joined her daughters and their families as she treated them to a trip of a lifetime: a European River Cruise through France, Germany, and Switzerland.
Marriott always put others before herself. She was a wonderful conversationalist and always took an intense interest in the lives of the people she met. She was incredibly generous with her family , the less fortunate and animals.
Marriott loved watching and discussing old movies. When her eyesight began to fail, she loved listening to books on tape. But even with eyes that were no longer perfect, she always wore fashionable sunglasses that brought smiles to all who saw her.
Marriott is survived by many who loved her; but she especially wanted us to acknowledge her precious caretaker of 10 years, Eileen Bland, who became one of Mom’s best friends. She also wanted us to acknowledge her beloved Cousin Gloria Ayers of Sedona, Arizona.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Westminster Canterbury, the staff at Senior Bridge, and to Catherine Youtagar for the wonderful care Marriott received. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to
