Marion Waverly Payne, Jr. departed this earthly life September 11, 2016 for his heavenly home. He was born in Lynchburg General Hospital September 30, 1934. His early childhood was spent in Gladstone, VA and he attended elementary school there and graduated from Appomattox High School, Appomattox, VA in 1952. He was employed by the C & O Railroad in 1955 and was drafted into the Army in 1957 and had basic training in Ft. Riley, KS. He was deployed to Baumholder Army Base, Germany in the artillery unit. He returned back to the states in May 1959 and was re-employed by the C & O RR for a total of 44 years. He married Betty J. Hupman July 12, 1969. He retired from his job in September 1999. His parents predeceased him: Marion Waverly Payne, Sr. and Lucy West Payne. He is survived by his wife, Betty H. Payne and his sister, Frances Payne Wills and her husband, Donald Wills and his Aunt Mary Payne Strickland, Gladstone, VA and many cousins. Since early childhood, he has been a member of Bethany Norwood United Methodist Church, Wingina, VA (Nelson County). Also, he has been a member of the Varina Ruritan Club. Since retiring he has researched the genealogy of Payne, West, Moon, and Harris families. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA where services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
