Joyce Mayo Jones, 89, formerly of Highland Springs, departed this life on January 16, 2018, to join her Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin J. Jones; parents, Henry and Lucy M. Mayo; brothers, Henry and James Mayo; and sisters, Annie Mae Kidd and Vivian Crawford. Joyce is survived by her three children, Frederick A. Jones (Susan), Susan J. Murphy and Robert H. Jones (Kathy); six grandchildren, Jason M. Murphy (Christy), Candace B. Hollender (Brandon), Karah L. Gunther (Geoff), Seth H. Jones, Bretton F. Jones (Debbie) and Courtney G. Jones; and eight great-grandchildren. Born October 7, 1928, she was a lifelong member of New Bridge Baptist Church which included more than 65 years in the church choir. A graduate of Highland Springs High School in 1945, she was a resident of Highland Springs over 50 years. She served as president of Highland Springs Jr. and Sr. Woman’s Clubs, was an officer and member of Women’s Missionary Union and was an appointed member of Adam Crump Nursing Home. She served as president of the Highland Springs Elementary School PTA. Often performing as a soloist, she had a great love of music. A frequent volunteer, she gave generously of her time and resources. Considerable time was spent at her second home on Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County where she loved gardening, cooking, and entertaining her family and guests. She was a lovely and special lady. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Nelsen Funeral Home, Laburnum Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m., at New Bridge Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Bridge Baptist Church Missions Fund.
