Obituary of Joanne P. Graves Mickens

John 11:25-26 Minister Joann P. Graves Mickens, 80, of Henrico, VA., slipped away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, VA. She was born on November 9, 1943, to the late Clarence and Elnora Graves. She received her education at Louisa County Public Schools. Minister Joann furthered her education later in life while living in Delaware. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a young age and became a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church, until she moved to Delaware. Minster Joann was employed with the Federal Government for many years until retirement. She loved to travel, read books, and swim. On November 9, 2012 (her birthday) Joann married her loving and devoted husband Charles L. Mickens, Sr. They adored one another and loved traveling the world and enjoying retirement together. She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Elnora Graves; sister, Paula G. Jackson; four brothers, Gene, Kelvin, Melvin, and Roger Graves. She was also preceded in death by brothers-in law, James L. Mickens, Clarence Thornton and Major James Jackson. Joanne leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Charles L. Mickens Sr.; four bonus children, Dwayne Streeter, of South Carolina, Pavonda Mickens, of Washington, DC, Latonia (Jamie) Mickens of Henrico, VA, and Charles (Felisha) L. Mickens Jr. of Raleigh, NC; several bonus grandchildren and bonus great grandchildren; four brothers, Clarence Graves of Mineral, VA, Norman Graves (Gwendolyn) of Maryland, Sterling Graves of Washington, DC and David Graves (Pauline) of Beaverdam, VA; two sisters, Shirley Thornton of Washington, DC and Stephany Gist, of Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Reid (Marion) and Raphael (Madeline) Mickens, of Maryland; one sister-in-law, Rebecca F. Mickens of Ruther Glen, VA; one uncle, James Yancey (Janet) of Delaware; one goddaughter, Telia Huffman; and one devoted friend, Mazzie Simmons; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joanne will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love her. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 27, 2024, at 12 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231
