Joan was born on June 24, 1932 in Lynchburg, VA to Benjamin Carrington Hartsook and Gladys O’Brien Hartsook. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School, and later went on to graduate from James Madison University. After meeting George Moore, Jr. on a double date, and having a short courtship they married on April 23, 1960. George and Joan raised their three children, Suzanne, George, and Ben while living in various cities, including, Syracuse NY, Louisville KY, Columbia MD, and Zanesville OH. They were married for 27 years before George Jr. passed in 1987. Joan returned to Richmond to be with her family and has resided here ever since.
Joan showered her gift of hospitality on everyone around her. She generously cared for her neighbors, and she hosted countless dinner parties for her friends and family. She possessed an unrivaled strength of spirit, regularly giving of herself, yet requiring little in return. She loved her daily outdoor walks, her weekly bible studies, and taking care of her grandchildren. Joan volunteered and contributed to numerous causes. She helped found a group home for women with mental disabilities in Richmond for Hope Family Services. She served as a volunteer in the pastor’s office at Third Presbyterian Church of Richmond and as a Candy Striper at Genesis Healthcare in Zanesville. And she managed all of this while tirelessly caring for her disabled daughter for 58 years.
Joan is survived by her two sons, George William Moore III (wife Judi) and Benjamin Carrington Moore (wife Cara) as well as their extended families including 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Larry Hartsook (wife Betsy). She is preceded in death by her husband, George William Moore Jr., by her daughter, Suzanne Elizabeth Moore, and by her two sisters, Jewell Hartsook Sanderson and Phyllis Hartsook Johnson. She sadly leaves many of her newly found friends at Tuckahoe Pines Retirement Community. Her family extends their gratitude to the staff and neighbors there, who so openly welcomed and cared for her.
Joan previously attended Third Presbyterian Church in Richmond, and more recently attended church with George and Judi at the Vertical Church.
