Janet Alling Johnson

Nannie was a devoted mother and grandmother who touched the lives of many with her kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love. She is survived by her four daughters: Jennifer Ann Johnson, Meredith Johnson Bondurant and her husband John David Bondurant, Leslie Jean Dulay and her husband Edwin Dulay, Megan Susan Johnson and her husband Chris Stevens; and her eight cherished grandchildren: Seth Catlin Johnson, John William Bondurant, Carter Cole Bondurant, Mia Claire Bondurant, Jackson Lacuata Dulay, Grace Goss Dulay, Gustave Jameson Stevens, and Marley Stevens; her sister Susan Graves Eberhart and her husband Jack Eberhart, countless nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Peekaboo. She is preceded in death by her son Casey Miller Johnson, her brother John Catlin Goss, and her parents John Catlin and Helen Edith Goss.

Throughout her life, Nannie was known for her generosity, warmth, and positivity, which radiated through her smile, laughter and approach to life. Born in Portland Oregon on May 10, 1944, she was raised in the Portland Heights neighborhood, where she grew up with lifelong friends who fondly described her as their leader of fun and mischief. She graduated from University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s in Nursing, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Master’s in Education, and Radford University with a Master’s in Counseling. As a dedicated nurse and teacher, she touched the lives of countless people with her compassionate care and inspiring guidance. Nannie formed meaningful friendships that spanned a lifetime, including an amazing group of women in Martinsville, Virginia who loved and supported her always. Nannie had good friends because she was a good friend.

Nannie had a passion for sports, particularly tennis, and rarely missed her grandchildren's sporting events, cheering them on with unwavering enthusiasm. Her favorite color was yellow and her favorite band was Peter, Paul, and Mary. She loved watching Survivor, the political process, People magazine, and volunteering at the local hospital. One of her greatest pleasures was relaxing and toodling around Smith Mountain Lake, finding joy in floating on the water. She was a very good skier back in the day and taught her kids how to ski. She believed in being prepared and was very organized in all things in life, including teaching her kids how to drive a stick shift…’just in case’, she said. She was an expert Hearts player, tenacious with puzzles, and was known for her love of Lays Potato Chips and Diet Mountain Dew, which she enjoyed with a smile.

Her legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

A memorial service to celebrate Janet's life will be held at 11am on August 17, 2024 at Woody’s Funeral Home-Parham (1771 N Parham Rd, Richmond, VA 23229).
