POWERS, Jamie Louise Collins, 97, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2017. Born in Surry County, NC, to Leila Myrtle Vernon and James Edgar Collins, she did not meet her father until his return from France after WWI. The young family moved to Amelia County, Virginia, to live near their extended Vernon family. Jamie graduated from Amelia HS at 16 and moved to Richmond to attend business school and work. In 1941, she met and married Thomas Maurice Powers. After embracing membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, raising her family and serving the Lord Jesus Christ became the focus of her life. Maurice passed away in 1986. Jamie worked faithfully in the community and in the church, from selling poppies on Memorial Day and serving as a judge at polling precincts, to serving a mission for the LDS church. Jamie loved to travel and never met a stranger. She is preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Collins. She is survived by her sister, Gladys Robertson; children, Michael Powers, Linda Parker, Lydia Vaughan, Maribeth Pettigrew, Deborah Hall, James Powers, Amy Toiaivao, and their spouses; 29 grandchildren; 59 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, 23231. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at the Powers/Amos Family Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. That afternoon, there will be a funeral at 2 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 8005 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville, 23111.
