Hoyle Sager "Chick" Walters

Hoyle S. “Chick” Walters, a lifelong resident of Virginia died Sunday, June 11, 2017 from complications of diabetes, and an unexpected diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma at his home at the Hermitage at Cedarfield in Henrico County. His wife, Ruby M. Walters predeceased him on August 22, 2016 and his brother “Bob” passed in 2002. He is survived by his two daughters, Wendra Leigh Mihaly (Ed) of Dorothy, N.J. and Joanne Whitney Walters (Ed) of Wicomico Church, VA; his granddaughters, Linsey Mihaly Nagtzaam ( Josh) of Alexandria, Va ., and Lauren Mihaly Borcherding (Robbie) of Wayzata, Minn,; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Reid and Graham Nagtzaam, and Cecilia Borcherding.

Chick was widely recognized locally and throughout Virginia as a business leader. He retired as Vice President of Goldberg Company, Inc., a wholesale distributor of RCA , Whirlpool and other consumer products. He was the developer and owner of 360 West Shopping Center and other commercial developments in the state of Virginia.

Chick was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school, and was a member of Church Council. He and his wife Ruby contributed significant capital resources to build Epiphany Lutheran‘s new chapel as an addition to the church. He was previously a Charter Member of St. Luke Lutheran Church prior to re-locating to Goochland, where he was both a Council member and Sunday school teacher.

In 2004, he and Ruby moved to the Hermitage at Cedarfield Retirement Community from their home ‘Fernwood” in Goochland, Va . Chick was very active in the activities of the retirement community, including serving on the Council. He was also Chairman of their United Way Campaign and Chairman of Cedarfield Employee Christmas Fund. He also chaired the Cedarfield Investment Club.

His many interests and hobbies included his collection of famous and unique “Big Band” music, gardening, traveling around the world with his wife to places including Europe, Asia, Japan, Russia, New Zealand and Australia and visited most of the individual states in the United State. In his younger days, he packed up the station wagon, and along with Ruby, Wendy and Joanne drove the mountains, the plains, the east and west coasts on vacations all over the United States that were the most wonderful experiences for his family they could ever wish for. There were many times when he fussed at his daughters for kicking the back of his seat, smacking bubble gum and his having to answer the penultimate question “are we there yet?” He also was highly encouraged by his daughters to stop and let them use their allowance to buy trinkets and toys form “South of the Border”.

Chick was born in Danville, Va and as a young man, relocated to Richmond for college after his military service. He was graduated from what was the named Richmond Professional Institute, and is now VA Commonwealth University. It was in Richmond where he met the love of his life, Ruby on a blind date and they married six months later.

He was one of the “Last Generation” as a World War II Army Veteran, Battery A, 567th Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion, where he served in the Battles and Campaigns of Norther France, Ardennes, Rhineland , Central Europe, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and Word War II Victory Ribbon. Chick was separated from the Army after demobilization of WWII. During his service to our country, he acquired the nick name , “Chick “ which stuck with him for the remainder of his life.

The family wishes to thank the many employees of Cedarfield, especially the Cedarfield Nursing Staff and Social Workers, without whom his and Ruby’s long life would not have been possible. A special thank you to Rosa, Cheryl, Cheena, Celestine, Teresa, Katy Jackie, Debra, Tiffany, Julie, Diane, Patty, Angela, Cynthia, Ennis, Terry and all the other wonderful nurses, Social Workers Kathy Moran and Zack Barret, the wonderful waiters and waitress and therapist who did so much to help Chick during his illness. A very special thank you to Dr. Michael Vranian and his team work with Community Hospice of Richmond, all of whom made our father’s crossing over a less painful journey for him and his daughters.

Chick was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and friend; a benefactor to many, and he never ever met a stranger. His credo was to pay it forward and he hopes that others will do likewise. He had a good ride in this life and he knew it and never took it for granted.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 18, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229. Funeral Services are scheduled at 1:00pm Monday, June 19th, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1400 Horsepen Road, Richmond, VA 23226 (intersection of Horsepen and Monument Avenue)., to be immediately followed by his burial service with Military Honors at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23238. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in Chick’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Epiphany Lutheran Church, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) or a charity of your choice.
