Captain Hiram Vance (Retired), 91, of the Virginia Department of State Police, died November 26, 2012. A native of Smyth County, Captain Boone was the son of Wiley P. Boone and Mary Prater Boone of Marion, Virginia. Captain Boone graduated from Marion High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II with the Field Artillery in the China, Burma and India (CBI) Theater of Operations. He participated in four campaigns against the Japanese in Burma. He served as Commander of the Central Virginia Veterans' Association for three years. After returning home from WWII, Captain Boone entered the service of the Virginia State Police in 1946 and served for 33 years. At retirement, he was Commander of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation located at the Administrative Headquarters in Chesterfield County. Captain Boone was a graduate of the Southern Police Institute, University of Louisville and State Police Officer's Command School, University of Maryland. He was a member of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Southern Police Institute Alumni, and Virginia State Police Alumni, where he served as president in 1984. Upon retirement from the State Police in 1979, he accepted employment with Dominion Virginia Power in their security department. At retirement from Dominion Virginia Power in 1985, he was Supervisor of Investigation. Next taking employment with Covington International Travel Services until 1994. Captain Boone was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Glen Allen, Va. Captain Boone was predeceased by his first wife, Mattie Sutter Boone and his second wife, Dorothy Cable Boone. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Betters; and son-in-law, Robert Betters; two stepsons, Vincent Cable and Donald Cable. Captain Boone is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2012. Interment in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Va.
