Len was preceded in death by his father Herbert Austin.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Austin Haislop, his sons Granton and Gamble Austin, his brothers Wray (Beth), Steve, and Larry Austin, his nieces Kaylee Moore (Jacob) and Andie Scarpa (Hunter).
There was nothing Len loved more than spending time with his children. They meant everything to him. They loved spending time with neighborhood friends, boating, and whatever the boys wanted to do. Second to his children, were his family and friends. Len had many friends that were as close as family – Robbie Cottrell for one. Len also had buddies that he loved spending time with at Crowder’s Mobile - aka “The Station”. Ray Crowder was a constant in Len’s life, and they shared a special friendship that included riding motorcycles together, attending “bike week” in Myrtle Beach every year, and spending quality time with all the Crowder’s “patrons” who Len cared a great deal for. Len will also be remembered for his 30 years of service to our country where he served as a Senior Master Sergeant with the Virginia Air National Guard, 192nd Division. In this role, he made lifelong friends, mentored many, and had special relationships with too many to mention. Len was a family man, THE BEST friend, and will be missed by so many.
The family will receive friends Thursday, December 30, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231 where a funeral service will be held Friday, December 31, at 12 p.m.
Interment will follow at Washington Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to We Care for America Foundation at eangus-wcfa.org.
The family would enjoy your company and hearing personal stories and memories of Len at a reception that follows the funeral service at the Hill Building (501 Beulah Road Sandston, VA 23150).
