JOHNSON, Gilbert Daniel Sr., 73, of Varina, formerly of Goochland County, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty- two years, Peggy Melton Johnson; son, Gilbert Daniel Johnson, Jr. (Sheila); daughter, Kristie Johnson Hooper; grandchildren, Ryan, Blaine, and Brette Hooper; step-grandchild; Chelsea Graham; step-great grandchild, Mackenzie Lee; brothers, Monroe Johnson (Margie), Leroy Johnson (Doris), Delmas Johnson (deceased); sisters, Beverly DuVal, Lynnel Morris; sister-in-law, Ellen Johnson and many other family members and friends. Gilbert was a self-employed general contractor for over 30 years and a life time member and former Governor of the Sandston Moose Lodge #1937. Gilbert was known as the hardest working man to everyone that knew him. He knew no stranger and was the kindest, strongest, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Gilbert loved his home in the country (Goochland County) where he farmed, gardened and hunted all his life. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm with a Loyal Order of Moose memorial service at 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 2:00pm at Nelsen Funeral Home 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather afterwards at the Varina American Legion Post #233 Building, 8088 Recreation Rd. Richmond, VA 23231. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Ct. Richmond, VA or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
