TEASE, Elsie York Verelle, age 88, beloved sister and aunt, went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charmlyn and Alma Webb Verelle; siblings Thelma Nuckols, Clinton and Garland Verelle, and Marion Mason. Elsie is survived by her sister, Alma Iris Vaughan; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was born in Green Bay, Va. then lived and was educated in Farmville, including two years at State Teachers College (Longwood). After moving to Richmond, Elsie graduated from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She enjoyed her first job at Hopewell Christian Church, especially working with the youth. Later, Elsie worked at Richmond Memorial Hospital as a secretary and finally as head of volunteers. All sports were a special interest to Elsie, as she played on many school teams. She was an excellent basketball player while on the VA Hospital girls' team. Battery Park Christian Church was her church home from 1942 until her death. Elsie was an excellent Sunday School teacher and director of church drama and music groups. She loved all of her years of service to her church family. Elsie was blessed by being cared for by Westminster Canterbury's Health Care staff and Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Pkwy, Richmond, Va. 23227.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, September 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, Va. 23229. A reception will be held at Battery Park Christian Church, 4201 Brook Rd., Richmond, Va. 23227, on Sunday, September 25, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. at the church following the reception. The burial will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
