David was born January 13, 1945, a little over a month before his father died as a POW in World War II. David’s early life was marked by the death of his father and 3 uncles (Temple Anderson, Raymond Hanvey, and Kayo Crabtree). The men of Sandston joined David’s mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncles to nurture young David in Christian faith, as well as in fishing, bricklaying, electrical repair, and business management. As a 14-year-old, he was hired at the Sandston service station repairing automobiles, driving every kind of car, helping with the financial records, and being trusted with the station keys!
After graduating Highland Springs High School, David studied business and engineering at Richmond Polytechnical Institute (RPI) and interned in many local Richmond manufacturers. Lee Industries, Usery Mobile Trailers, and McTavish Industries prepared him for a management position at General Medical. In the 1980s, he helped found Megaplast which became Sterile Concepts. David’s was known professionally as a Plant Manager pioneering with his friends in consumable sterile hospital supplies. However, his vocation also included years as the Director of the Civitan Workshop of Richmond (now ARC) where he provided training for disabled adults and pioneered recycling in Richmond. In the early 2000s, David retired from his last professional adventures at Avid Medical. His life was one of service and reflects the diverse experiences of his childhood.
David grew up in Sandston and was raised in Sandston Baptist Church where he met Jean while still on the church Cradle Roll. Their wedding in 1967 began a 51-year marriage of devotion for better and worse, sickness and health, richer and poorer, with love and cherishing until Jean’s death after many years fighting Alzheimer’s together. Jean died in 2018, and David’s subsequent 6 years continued to be marked by Jean’s presence and her absence. He shared his grief and prayed faithfully for family and friends.
David was a deacon at Sandston Baptist Church by the time he was in his early twenties. While a member at Westhunt Baptist Church, he was active in the Dover Baptist Association including leadership in the association’s presence on TV. Later, David was a member Mount Vernon Baptist Church for more than 35 years, and yet more friends became part of his family.
David passed away on the eve of Jean’s birthday; they now rest peacefully together. Together, they have left a legacy of faith and devotion; an example for what you can do when the odds seem stacked against you.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Prior to the funeral which will be at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, VA 23059 August 31, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to Sandston Founder’s Club (https://sandstonfc.org/contact/) or The Arc of Virginia (https://www.thearcofva.org)
