Danny Gilbert was born in a Norfolk, Virginia hospital in 1943 to Charlie and Lilly Mae Gilbert. He grew up in Rockville, Va along with his 2 older brothers, Jack, who was a year older and Jimmy, who was the eldest at 6 years older. Danny enjoyed growing up in the country, hunting, fishing and playing ball with his brother, Jack and friends. Jack and Danny were in separatable throughout his life. They were not only brothers but were each other’s best friend until his passing. He graduated in 1962 from Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Va and immediately went to work for Virginia Department of Transportation as an Engineer Technician, where he worked for 32 years until retirement. He married Sandra Burch in 1965 and had 2 sons, Dean and Neil. He continued to be active throughout his adult life, fishing, hunting, softball, tennis and jogging. One of his proudest achievements was completing the 26-mile Richmond Marathon at age 40.
He was very active in his son’s, Dean, sports that he played, baseball and football. He spent countless hours practicing and watching him play until he graduated High School in 1984. After a car accident in 1992, he was no longer able to be as active as he once had been due to a severe back injury, but he still enjoyed going to watch his granddaughter, Tori, play softball since she started playing at age 6. Tori continued to play softball at University of Virginia, where she graduated from last month. Although, he was not able to see her play in person at college, he still followed her and watched her on TV when broadcasted. After Danny’s injury, he became especially close with his youngest son, Neil, who had been a tremendous help to Danny through his long battle with his back injury, by checking in on him daily and bringing him anything he might need.
Danny was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Gilbert, mother, Lilly Mae Lyles Gilbert, and eldest brother, Jimmy Gilbert and ex-wife, Sandra Burch Gilbert.
