Thoms, Carroll Louis departed this life on December 26, 2022. He was born on November 18, 1924, and lived his life in Richmond, VA. He was the son of the late Alvin Louis Thoms and the late Caroline Loraine Thoms. Carroll was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Claire Thoms, and his brother, Alvin Louis Thoms Jr. He is survived by his children, Robert C. Thoms, and William A. Thoms. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel E. Thoms, Joshua B. Thoms, and Kevin D. Thoms.
Carroll attended Ginter Park Elementary School where his father was the principal, and Chandler Junior High Middle School. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the 15th Air Force, became an upper turret gunner on a B-24 bomber, and flew missions in Italy and Austria. After World War II, he attended Washington & Lee University and graduated in 1949. He worked as an underwriter for Life of Virginia Insurance Company and spent most of his career as a sales representative for Hynson, Westcott & Dunning and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. He later became a court liaison for Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center.
He loved traveling internationally with his beloved wife, Claire, and attending performances at the Richmond Symphony, Virginia Opera, and Barksdale Theater.
The family will receive visitors at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N, Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229 on January 9 from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM. A graveside funeral service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Ln, Richmond, VA 23222 on January 10 at 11:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow the service at the home of a family friend Bill Brown. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Humanist Association and the American Heart Association.
