GUNTER, Carolyn Harshbarger, of Richmond and Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Jacob C. and Patience C. Harshbarger; husband Ben D. Gunter. She was born at the University of Virginia hospital and was raised in Harrisonburg, VA. She graduated from Bridgewater College, where she met her husband Benny. She received her graduate degree from the University of Virginia and began her teaching career with Henrico County Public Schools for 34 years. Crestview Elementary School and its faculty were her extended family, drivers to events, traveling companions, and BUNCO friends. Carolyn was a good friend to all, and never met a stranger. She loved to talk. Her humor, sharp wit, personality, and complete honesty were known to all. She was the life of the party! Her family and friends will keep that spirit alive through the numerous funny stories surrounding her life and her ability to always inspire laughter. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth G. Daly (Jeff) and grandchildren, Clark (Jessica), Elizabeth, Mason and two great grandchildren, Penelope and Clark; her son Charles R. Gunter (Carlisa) and grandchildren, Chad and Courtney. They are all grateful, as was Carolyn, for the care and compassion extended by Westminster’s nurses and staff. A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue Richmond, VA 23227 on Thursday, June 1, at 2:00. A reception will immediately follow in the Rice Room. History was her passion; the "Harrisonburg House", the Shenandoah Valley and its mountains her love. As a tribute to all things Carolyn we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered to The Society of Port Republic Preservationists PO Box 82 Port Republic, VA 24471 or The Harrisonburg Rockingham Historical Society PO Box 716 Dayton, VA 22821.
