Betty was born on November 22, 1927, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Rufus and Beulah Hale. She grew up in Middlesboro, Tennessee, and Roanoke, Virginia. In Roanoke, she attended William Fleming High School where she met—and later married—her high school sweetheart, Bill (William E.) Sigmon.
She and Bill moved to Richmond in 1970. Bill died in 1999.
Betty’s lifelong passions were family, church, and music. She was a gifted pianist and contralto vocalist. Wherever they lived, Betty was involved in church music, as a choir member, soloist, accompanist, bell-ringer, and director of children’s choirs. During her daughters’ growing up years, she was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and a leader at the Sing Out South chorale. Betty was also a church secretary, having retired from Three Chopt Presbyterian Church in 1994 after 15 years of service.
After she moved to Cedarfield in 1996, Betty was an accompanist for Sunday church services and for the annual Cedarfield Follies program. She was also a member of the Cedarfield Knitters, where her creations were donated to the Christmas Mother program and to the Red Cross.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Anne Sigmon, of Lafayette, CA, and Ellen Davis of Kitty Hawk, NC; their spouses, Jack Martin and Jim Davis; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held in the chapel At The Hermitage at Cedarfield retirement complex, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Richmond, Friday, July 18, 2014 at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Betty’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association
