Betty Banks Stanley Akers passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, VA surrounded by loved ones on September 10, 2018. She was born June 24th, 1932 in Roanoke, Virginia, the only child of Elizabeth Muncy Stanley and Francis Atwood Stanley. She grew up in Roanoke, VA before moving to attend college at her cherished Longwood University. There she spent many happy days and became a lifelong fan of her Alma mater. Soon after college, she married and moved to Waynesboro, VA with her husband to start their family. Eventually she had two daughters who were the pride and joy of her life. Betty enjoyed golfing, tennis (in her younger years), gardening, and anything that involved being outside. Betty had a great sense of humor and was a firecracker to her last days. Her family will miss her quick wit and easy laughter. She is survived by her daughters, Tammy Akers Horning (Barry) and Cindy Akers Spangler (Tom). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Horning O’Rourke (Aaron), Jaimie Lynn Horning Jones (Matt), Paul Alan Horning, Hunter Thomas Spangler, Arthur Kemp Spangler, and Elizabeth Peyton Spangler. Lastly, she leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Addison and Benjamin O’Rourke, Isaac Jones, and Mila Roeung. The family would like to thank the staff at Discovery Village in the West End of Richmond, Virginia for their exemplary care of Betty. They provided loving support and a lively environment which filled her days. We look forward to meeting her again happily sitting on the beach with the sun on her face. Funeral services will be private.
