Bertha Adelaide Robertson Pitts

Pitts, Bertha Adelaide Robertson, 97, of Richmond, Virginia went home to be with God on April 6, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband and sweetheart, Oscar Dew Pitts, Jr., with whom she had an uncommon devotion and love, her daughter Katherine Pitts Long and two sisters, Doris Adkisson and Jane Brunger. Bertha is survived by her daughter, Nancy Pettigrew (Jack), her grandchildren, Shearer Pettigrew (Tommy Pusser) and John Pettigrew, Jr. and great-grandchildren, Jack Pusser and Skyler Pusser, all of Richmond. She is also survived by a sister, Bobbie Stables of Farmville and a brother, Rob Robertson of Richmond.

Bertha was retired from Duplex Envelope Company where she was the Administrative Assistant to the President of the company. She and Oscar were one of the charter members of Lakeside Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was involved in G.A’s and W.M.U. Since 1983 she has been an active member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class. Bertha had a love for people, never meeting a stranger. Because of her deep faith and her mission spirit, she never hesitated to invite others to church. Her generous spirit often found her taking food to someone in need, or sharing flowers from her garden. She grew up on a farm in Dinwiddie and her love for the outdoors began early by planting corn and tobacco with her Dad and working in the garden with her Mom. With most everything she did whether being at the beach, traveling with Oscar, being at home in her garden, or by the pictures she painted, it was easy to see she loved all of God’s world.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Lakewood Manor and especially to the HSB Third Floor Nursing Staff. Your care and kindness expressed in so many ways will long be remembered.

Friends and family will be received from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 12 at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. A funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Richmond on Monday, April 13 at 2PM, with internment at Hollywood Cemetery.
