Born to the late Rev. G. Roy Beals and Pauline Gibson Beals in Ironton, Ohio, on February 25, 1933, she was a magna cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1955 and returning to earn her Master of Arts in Education in 1978. Her early professional career was as a high school French and math teacher in Richmond and Roanoke, Va., and then as a middle school guidance counselor in Alexander County, N.C. However, her primary service was as a beloved wife and partner in ministry of 58 years to her late husband and in the service of their churches: Tabernacle Baptist Church, Richmond, from 1955 to ‘59; Raleigh Forbes Baptist Church, Richmond, 1959 to ‘65; Connelly Memorial Baptist Church, Roanoke, 1965 to ‘72; First Baptist Church, Taylorsville, N.C., 1972 to ‘86; and Hunton Baptist Church in Glen Allen, 1986 to 2001. In all these churches, she regularly served in various volunteer roles including Sunday School Director, Vacation Bible School Director, and Education Director. In fact, Hunton Baptist acknowledged her service by naming her Director of Education and placing her on the church staff. She completed her professional career with her husband as Associate for Ministers’ Families, Dover Baptist Association, Ashland, 2002-2012, supporting younger ministers and spouses.
She is survived by three sons, Robert L. Boggs Jr. of Lansdale, Pa., William B. and wife, Melanie P. Boggs, of Richmond; Bennett G. Boggs, of Denver, Colo; granddaughters, Brynn Boggs of Berea, Ky., and Bethany Boggs, of Lexington, Ky.; and grandsons, Peyton and Wesley Boggs of Richmond.
