HAVENS, Arthur Eugene Jr., 91, builder and land developer of Richmond, Va., died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 9, 2011. Mr. Havens was born and raised in Richmond and attended The McGuire School. He began his career in construction in 1947 with Derwent Gardens in Richmond. In 1952 Mr. Havens began developing along the River Road corridor. He displayed an uncanny ability to foresee the potential of land. Some of his most notable developments include Roslyn Hills in the 1950's and Colonial Court Apartments in 1965. He has been a real estate broker since October 1956. In the decades that followed, he acquired a number of apartment communities in Richmond, Midlothian, Louisa, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Roanoke, Va. and in Greensboro, N.C. He is survived by Joan H. Havens, his wife of 44 years, and seven children; Linda M. Havens, Arthur "Mike" E. Havens III (Elice), Cathy H. Saferight (Harry), Starr H. Mawyer, Robin H. Floyd (Charles), Scott J. Havens, and Brett A. Havens (Silvana); 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. from 2 to 4 and 6 until 8 pm.
