Annie Kathryn Deem, 96, departed this life peacefully on March 5. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Glen H. Deem, in 1997 after 54 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughters, Beverly Boone and her husband David, of Delray Beach, Fla.; Linda Jennings and her husband Robert, of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Rebecca Boone Bull and her husband Robert, of Bethesda, Md.; Jacob Boone and his wife, Elizabeth of Los Angeles, Calif.; Keriann Boone Filippi and her husband Jon, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and Christopher Jennings and Katie Jennings, both of Richmond, Va; and three great-grandchildren, Megan, Charlotte and Amelia Bull.
Born in Batesville, Miss. and raised in Oxford, Miss. by John Edgar and Annie Thompson Belk, Kathryn learned to play tennis at University High School and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1940 where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. One of Kathryn’s best friends in Oxford was Victoria Franklin (Cho Cho), stepdaughter of author William Faulkner, and Kathryn often shared her vivid memories of the famous author who lived just a few blocks from her home. She also worked as a census taker for the 1940 Census in Oxford.
Following graduation from college, Kathryn moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the War Department and met her husband Glen, a US Navy officer. They married in 1943 and settled in Arlington, Va. where Kathryn taught at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. Upon her retirement in 1981 Kathryn played golf and was on the tennis team at Washington Golf & Country Club. Following her move to Richmond in 1997, she played tennis and golf at the Richmond Country Club until the age of 86. During her years in Richmond Kathryn was a member of Derbyshire Baptist Church and enjoyed Duplicate Bridge, crossword puzzles, and Mahjong.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Hospice of Virginia and Gayton Terrace Assisted Living for their superb care and compassion in caring for Kathryn.
Visitation with refreshments will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015 at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home on 1771 N. Parham Rd. Richmond, VA with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. The interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park located at 10000 Patterson Ave.
