I'm very sorry for your loss.  He was a very nice man and loved by many.  Your family are in my thoughts.

We love you dearly. You guys are our family. Wish we could be there. God now has a Wonderful Angel with him that will suffer no more discomfort. Always and forver with love. Will see you again in Heaven..You will be sitting on your. front porch of your Heavenly Home waiting for the rest of us.

Simon Martinez has always been a great influence in my life. He was always fixing, building or doing something cool I wanted to be part of when I visited as a kid. I always think of his workshop when I enter my own. To my youthful eyes, it had everything needed to build or fix anything, and I was pretty sure he could fix or build anything. I saw him at work once before he retired from Sears. He had a VCR opened up with all the guts hanging out. Back when a VCR cost nearly a month's wages, I knew he must be some sort of genius to be able to figure all that stuff out. When I was about 14, I opened up a cassette player and fixed a pulley that had come undone. I felt I was one small step closer to the unattainable greatness. 
He always kept the yard in great shape and it seemed like he'd build or installed something new and magnificent in the back every couple of years. Allegedly there were also turtles and rabbits hiding back there at one time or another. All I ever found were snails and last year's Easter egg. Later in life, I built little grape plant trellis and a small fountain in my backyard, hoping to replicate the huge waterfall he had (it seemed so big as a kid). 
When I was a teenager with my own truck, I'd stop by and visit him and Grandma when I got a chance. It was always good to stop by and see was new with the house and catch up on a few things going on with aunts, uncles and cousins (it never hurt that grandma always had cookies too). He'd always give me a few bucks for “the last birthday that he missed”. I'm pretty sure he just knew teenagers always need gas money. 
Throughout adulthood, I'd try to stop by when I was in town. Being stationed in other parts of the world though, the times were few and far between. It was 2005 or '06, the last time I got to see him. We talked about time in the service, the Philippines, family, and grandchildren. 
I've been overseas every time a grandparent has passed away. I'm in the same situation this time. I'm praying for the safety of my family as they travel from near and far to attend his funeral. I hope the shared love and admiration we all have for him help to alleviate the sadness of his passing.
Grandpa Simon will be truly missed, but never forgotten.

He was an amazing man and he will be missed by many. I'm proud to have gotten to be a part of the entire Martinez clan. They all have a wonderful sense of family and are fiercely loyal and that's because Simon instilled that attitude in his family through the years. I'll miss you.

We have been neighbors of the Martinez's for several years now, and before their arrival there was a lack of community in our neighborhood.  As my wife, children, and I have grown to know/love them, we have been the witness to an amazing love between two people.  I can only hope that my marriage is as interesting, loving and strong as this marriage.  Jennifer and I grieve for the loss, but feel comforted in the fact that we will all see him again someday.  God bless your family, and trust that this community feels the loss of a very special man who always carried a smile and a hug for our kids.
