Sue was born in South Bend Indiana and after high school, graduated from Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois, as a Pi Beta Phi. She was a teacher while Dick was in the army and graduate school until the children arrived.

Sue worked as a volunteer coordinator at the Network foodbank and services, was a member and elder of Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church and a member of Chapter EZ PEO.
