Reverend Lee Alvin Bedford, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Friday September 30, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Alvin Bedford, Sr. and Birdie Warner Bedford Thompson, and granddaughter, Jennifer Michelle Grubbs.
Born June 15, 1928 in Runge, Texas Mr. Bedford received degrees from Southern Methodist University and Perkins School of Theology. While attending seminary, he was a professional square dancer caller, signing with RCA Records and holding the # 1 best-selling record in Texas at the time.
Rev. Bedford was an ordained United Methodist minister for sixty years, serving numerous churches within the North and Central Texas Conferences. His pastorates included Walnut Hill United Methodist Church, 1st United Methodist Church of Garland, White Rock United Methodist Church and 1st United Methodist Church of Bedford. He formed the Casa Linda United Methodist which grew to 1800 members under his ministry. For several years, Reverend Bedford also served as the Director of Evangelism for the North Texas Conference, as well as Chaplain for the Texas Air National Guard and Dallas Police Department.
Lee made evangelistic ministry trips to Pakistan and Korea, as well as trips to India with World Vision International, one of the largest relief agencies in the world. He had a passion for pastoral ministry, mentoring hundreds of young ministers in the United States and abroad. He also enjoyed camping and woodworking and was a model train enthusiast with All Points North Railroad Club in his later years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Anne Lorene Bedford and children David Bedford and wife, Patti, Tom Bedford and wife, Becky, Leslie Grubbs and husband, Randy, Teresa Granberry and husband Samuel, John Bedford and wife Jan, and Cheryl Devoto and husband Khris. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren as well as his brothers, Robert Bedford and wife Rebecca, Lance Bedford and wife Cindy, and Tom Bedford and wife Kathy.
His family will receive friends at a visitation on Monday October 3rd from 6 to 8 pm at Sparkman Funeral Home 1029 South Greenville Ave. Richardson TX. His life will be commemorated on Tuesday, October 4th at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bedford, TX. A private interment will follow at Restland Cemetery.
