Joyce Thompson Cook flew into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 26, 2011, in McKinney, Texas following a lengthy illness. Joyce Jeanette Thompson was born March 15, 1927 in Itasca, Texas to Rev. Richard Frederick Thompson and Ethel Mae Griegory Thompson. She moved to Richardson, Texas in 1933 at the age of six when her father Fred Thompson accepted the position of pastor at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Joyce attended Richardson Schools and graduated with the Richardson High School Class of 1945. Joyce completed one year of college at Hardin Simmons in Abilene, Texas. She married the love of her life, Marlin Donald Cook of Addison, Texas on April 24, 1947 in Richardson, Texas. Joyce was employed seven years at the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Dallas, Texas 1946-1953. Joyce and Marlin began their family in October, 1953 with Don and the family grew to five with the addition of twin sons, Gregg and Craig, in October, 1957.
Joyce returned to the working world in 1969 with Richardson ISD where she completed 20 years of service, retiring in January, 1990. Joyce was all about Love. Love for her family, love for her Lord, love for her church. She loved beautiful flowers and music, especially playing the piano. Joyce worked in the Children’s Sunday School Ministry at First Baptist Church Richardson for over 20 years. During retirement Joyce enjoyed time with her family and regular domino games with her Sunday School Class members. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents Rev. Fred Thompson in 1961 and Ethel Thompson in 1983, her husband Marlin Donald Cook in 1972, son Stephen Craig Cook in 1991, brother R.V. Thompson in 2008, and her sister Geneva Lee Thompson in 2010. She is survived by son Marlin Donald Cook, Jr. and dearly loved daughter-in-law Mary Ann Cook of McKinney, Texas and son Stanley Gregg Cook of New Rochelle, New York. The Family would like to thank the wonderful staff at McKinney Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care given to Joyce during her time there.
Our most sincere thanks to the staff of First Baptist Church Richardson and particularly The Fidelis Sunday School Class and Joyce’s church friends for their many visits, cards, love and support.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Sparkman Funeral Home Richardson, TX. Memorial service will be Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Richardson, TX. with Dr. Elis Orozco officiating. There will be a brief visitation at the church from 1:15 pm – 2:00 pm prior to the service. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation to the James and Irene Landes Scholarship Fund at First Baptist Church Richardson 1001 N. Central Expy. Richardson, TX. 75080.
