Obituary
A descendant of a pioneer family in Birmingham, AL, Joe was born December 13, 1920 to Joseph P. Walker and Margaret Latady, grandson of William A. Walker and Virginia Mudd and Albert Latady and Ethel Holbrook. He passed away in Dallas, May 15, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Currier, three children; Joseph P. Walker III, Barbara L. Bush (Roger), and H. Clarissa Chandler (Warren), four grandchildren; Mark W. Chandler (Gillian), Joseph P. Walker IV (Mary), Emily L. Walker, and William D. Walker, two great-grandchildren; Joseph P. Walker V, and Alan Pruitt Walker, his sister, Margaret W. Grubb of Birmingham, Al and three nieces; Eugenia G. Schanbacher, Katherine G. Coleman (Thomas) and Margaret W. Grubb.
He was a graduate of the McCallie School and Georgia Tech where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Tech's Varsity Golf Team.
After graduating from Columbia University Officer Candidate School he served on the USS Canberra, a heavy cruiser, as Assistant Navigator in the South Pacific. In 1945 his ship was torpedoed and sent back to Boston Navy Yard for repairs. He met his wife, Helen at Harvard’s Officer Club aka the Hasty Pudding Club. They were married June 30, 1945 in Christ Episcopal Church, Cambridge, MA.
After his separation from the Navy in December 1945 he began his career in the financial investment business with Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Beane in Boston, MA. In 53 years his career took him from Boston to Palm Beach, FL to Birmingham, Al to Dallas. In 1980 he formed the Joseph P. Walker Co as well as a separate Insurance Agency where he specialized in Deferred Compensation Plans for municipalities and government entities such as DFW Airport.
In 1981 he joined the Park Cities Rotary Club and maintained an active membership where ever he lived after that. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship with Rotary International. His other Dallas memberships include; Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association (TOMFRA), The English-Speaking Union, The Dallas Knife and Fork Club, The Georgia-Tech Alumni Club and the Park Cities Club.
Joe was funny, faithful, loving and kind. He was "Smiles" in "Smiley Joe" in college. Joe was beloved by All who knew him.
The Walker family wishes to thank the personnel at Walnut Place Nursing Home and Bluebonnet Hospice for their very attentive, kind and loving care of Joe.
His Memorial Service was held Saturday, June 8th at 10:00am in the Chapel of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas. After the service those who wish to, may greet the family in the Parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Park Cities Rotary Foundation or the Charity of your choice.
At a later date, interment will be in the Currier Family plot in the Newton Cemetery in Newton, MA.
