Hermon C Cook Jr entered heaven on April 16, 2024, just two weeks prior to his 102nd birthday. A beloved husband of 71 years, father, grandfather, and uncle, his life focused on his family and his church.
Hermon was born and raised as an only child in Waxahachie, Texas, and after high school attended New Mexico Military Institute. From there to the University of Arkansas, he and his Sigma Nu fraternity brothers answered the call for military service and enlisted in the Army at the height of WWII. He served in Europe with the 3rd Army under General George Patton and is a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and the wintery campaign of 1944.
Upon returning to the US, and not wanting to venture far from home, Hermon enrolled at SMU where he received his degree in Geology. From there he joined his father in various businesses in Waxahachie including International Harvester, Ford, and Goodyear. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Virginia.
After a move to Tennessee, two children, and a move back to Texas in 1972, Hermon settled into Richardson where he worked and retired from Dywidag Systems International. He was an active member and deacon at First Baptist Church, Richardson. In retirement, Hermon and Virginia traveled the globe extensively.
It’s hard to imagine a life more lived; son, scholar, soldier, businessman, husband, father, grandfather, and most importantly unwavering Christian - for almost 102 years. He passed his love of hunting, shooting, and everything outdoors to his family, as well as his solidly grounded Christian values. But most importantly, he will be remembered as unselfishly giving and devoted to his wife, family, and his friends.
Hermon is preceded in death by his parents Hermon and Julia Mae Cook, as well as many of his best and dearest friends. He is survived by his wife Virginia Nolen Cook of Plano, children Hermon (and Michele) Cook of Georgia, Rosemary (and Kelly Atkins) Cook of Texas, grandchildren Christopher and Michael ( and Brenda Harkrider) Adcock, Julianna, Jacqueline and Ryan Cook, great-granddaughter Hannah Harkrider, as well as his beloved nieces and nephews.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
