Charley Able passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 1, 2020 in Richardson, Texas, at the age of 94. He was born in Columbus, Mississippi on September 14,1925 to Robert Albert and Kitty Belle Able. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Myrick Able, and his beloved wife of almost 61 years, Dolores Anne Goodyear Able.
Prior to meeting the love of his life, he had a career in boxing which earned him a Golden Gloves Championship and competed in matches in New York City and California. In 1950, Charley left his hometown of St. Louis, MO to move with his wife, one-year old daughter, and the rest of his office to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. There he continued working in data processing for the Federal Service with the Department of the Army until he retired at age 56. He often bragged about how proud he was to be a “converted” Texan.
Throughout his life he enjoyed having a good time, be it traveling, bowling, helping others, or playing any kind of game with family or friends. Most of all, he simply loved being a good husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Anyone that knew Charley will remember him for his kindness, smiles and laughter, sense of humor and countless stories of his life’s adventures. In his later years, he was respectfully called “Grandpa” by countless others as a term of endearment.
Charley cherished his family and he will be greatly missed by his only "favorite" (only) daughter Pam and husband Mike Johnson of Richardson, grandsons Timmothy and wife Melissa Kovacs of Gilbert, AZ, and Kenneth and wife Nicolle Kovacs of Rockwall, TX; great grandchildren Corben Kovacs, Alyssa Kovacs Jones, Sydney Sauvé Rainey, Bailee Sauvé, and Kody Kovacs; great, great grandchildren Braylen and Hunter Jones; niece Sheri and husband Jim Mankoski, and nephew Dr. Greg Able and wife Valerie.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Arden Courts and Pathway Hospice for their compassionate care and devotion.
