Betsy spent her formative years in Irving, TX where she graduated from Irving High School. She was further educated at Texas Tech University and the University of North Texas where she attained a Master’s in Education.
On June 25, 1966 she married the love of her life, Dennis Richardson, and began a 52-year journey filled with fun, family, and happiness.
Her primary job was as a world-class mother, but she also held down a side job as a full-time teacher at Terrace Elementary in Richardson, TX where she was beloved by her co-workers and students.
Betsy was elegant, charming, dignified, and fun-loving. Her outer beauty was matched by her loving kindness, consideration, and generosity. Betsy loved gardening, baking, and sewing, and she always kept a beautiful home.
Prior to Betsy’s 50th high school reunion, she wrote these words about herself:
"I've really had a pretty normal, regular life. I guess I could share that I have touched both Paul Anka and Frankie Vallie, but that's about as exciting as it gets. I've traveled to Paris and England and love all things English. My favorite thing has been being a mother, and my secret desire was to be Martha Stewart. My daughter has told me that I'm a damn goddess, and my teaching friends believe that I was Cleopatra in a former life (for reasons best not repeated). But, of course, they are prejudiced.
She was taken away too soon for everyone who knew her. On July 6, 2018, after a courageous fight with cancer, Betsy passed peacefully into the night. Surely heaven is better for her arrival.
Betsy is survived by her loving husband Dennis, devoted daughter Suzanne, and supremely grateful son Marcus. Siblings Janice (husband Eldon), Jimmy (wife Mary), and Fulton (wife Charlene) will miss her immensely, but take solace in knowing their sister is in a better place alongside their adoring parents Ruth and James Deaton. Betsy also leaves behind many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Her son Marcus said that his mother was the best person he has ever known.
Her daughter Suzanne best described her shortly before her passing: exceptional.
Following the funeral service, a graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 1413 E Irving Blvd., Irving TX 75060
