Sandra Sue Hughes (Sandy), beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024, in her home with her loving daughters by her side. Born on January 15, 1944, to James and Elizabeth Lowe, she spent her early years in Darby, MT, before moving to Renton, Washington.
In the 9th grade, she met Mike, who would become her loving husband. They embarked on a beautiful journey together, exchanging vows in 1962. Sandy graduated from Renton High School that same year. She maintained many friendships from her high school years and looked forward to the “'62 girl” parties.
Sandy and Mike relocated to Cordova, Alaska, where they embraced the challenges and delights of commercial fishing while raising their three daughters, Lori, Jodi, and Toni. Their time in Alaska created lifelong memories and forged unbreakable bonds.
In 1979, the family returned to Washington, where Sandy dedicated herself to her career at Boeing, working until her well-deserved retirement. However, what truly defined her was being a beautifully caring best friend and a hero to her daughters. Sandy’s love for her family knew no bounds, and she would go to great lengths to ensure their happiness and well-being.
After the passing of her beloved husband Mike in 1994, Sandy found love again in 2002 when she met John Ivanich. Their relationship brought her immense joy and companionship.
Sandy will be remembered for her unwavering strength, compassion, and selflessness. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She will be deeply missed.
Sandy is survived by her loving daughters Jodi and Toni, and son-in-law Reese. She will be deeply missed by her cherished grandchildren Tyler (Megan), Cory, Garrett (Jordan), Dylan (Jill), Easton, Jessica (Geoffrey), Rachel (David), and Nicole. Sandy was also a proud great-grandmother to Penelope, Claire, Margot, Reese, Lillian, Hank, Violet, Janna, Riven, Kelsey, and Geoffrey. She is also survived by her sister Charlene (Larry), along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Sandy was preceded in death by her husband Michael Hughes, her daughter Lori Roshau, her parents James and Elizabeth Lowe, her sister Virginia Larson, and her brother James Lowe.
As we mourn the loss of Sandy, let us also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the incredible impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her.
There will be a small graveside service on June 21st at 2:00 at Greenwood Memorial. The family invites you to join them for a celebration of life immediately following (4:00) at the Rutledge residence.
