Mike was born in Seattle, WA to Harold and Bernice Scoones.
Mike started his very busy career by working for his father’s contracting firm by day and working his machinist’s job by night. Mike’s first machinist job was at Pacific Car and Foundry, followed by Boeing, then to Young Corporation/Jorgensen Steel, then back to Boeing in the mid-1970s. When Mike retired from Boeing after more than 30 years as a machinist the tooling manual still had instructions for the use of a “Scoones Tool”, which Mike created.
In 1962, Mike met and married Rosita Scoones (née Pastores). His two children, Martin and Christina, were born and the family grew.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed everything from hunting and fishing to hiking and mountaineering. He absolutely loved to hit the road in his truck and drive to wherever the road took him. When the Forest Service stopped maintaining many hiking trails, Mike adopted the Downey Creek Trail and maintained it for over 20 years.
Working with his father to build the home that his immediate family grew up in, Mike also remodeled several homes for other family members. Mike was always there to help someone achieve their vision. It didn’t matter if it was building forms and pouring a foundation or framing and finishing a structure, Mike was always happy to help. This was a trait that Mike carried throughout his life. Being of service to others was built into Mike’s very being.
It has been noted by many people that Mike sometimes presented a very gruff exterior but that he also had a heart as big as the outdoors. Most of the people Mike developed a personal relationship with were treated as part of the family.
Mike is survived by his wife Rosita and his son Martin, his daughter-in-law Tawna and his granddaughters Ciera, Jorden, Kristin, and Lindsay. Mike is also survived by his sisters Sylvia, Sheila, and Mary. Mike is further survived by many nieces and nephews and many other in-laws and other relations.
Mike was preceded in death by his daughter Christina, his sisters Anne and Claire, his niece Bobby and his grandson Chance.
A memorial service will be planned at a future date after Covid restrictions relax.
