Henry Chu Sum, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was welcomed into the world on July 13, 1937, in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China. The second youngest of six children, he was born to Siu Fung Sum and Sui See Chan.
Henry's journey took him to Hong Kong where he found his picture bride, Ngan Siu Chan. They shared a beautiful marriage lasting 65 years and raised a loving family together, blessed with three children: Doris, Norman, and William.
In 1962, with dreams of providing a better life for his loved ones, Henry left his family behind and ventured to the United States, joining relatives in Seattle. A thrifty and hardworking man, he dedicated himself to his work, and after four years of perseverance, he was joyfully reunited with his family.
Henry spent his career as a chef until his retirement in 2012. While he was known for his skill in Chinese cuisine, his versatility made him a cherished cook among family and friends. His beef chow fun holds a special place in the hearts of those who enjoyed his culinary creations.
A quiet and private man, Henry was described by his family as an “old-fashioned Chinese” quiet reserved and somewhat formal, but yet not stuffy, often revealing a subtle sense of humor His greatest pride and joy centered around his family, especially his six grandchildren. He made time for them through weekly visits, family gatherings, and cherished moments teaching them how to ride bikes, and always remembering their birthdays and holidays.
Henry had a love for dim sum and was an enthusiastic Mahjong player. He was also known for his impressive collection of cassettes featuring Chinese opera. When not working, you might find him watching the news at the casino or enjoying a game of Seattle Sonics basketball.
We bid farewell to Henry Chu Sum, a man who lived a good life, surrounded by the love he so generously gave to his family. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
