Born in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, on April 2, 1953, Richard is survived by his brothers, Doug (Julie) and Gerald (Sharon) and his sisters, Lynn Bayne (Garth), Patricia Scott and Kathryn Hodgins (Lin), Elaine Byrne, and cousins.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, Tracy and Ella Wallbridge of Govan, and Thomas and Edith Scott of Glen Ewen, his parents, Reginald and Gladys Scott of Hatfield, brothers Robert and Ken and sister Shanne, as well as his maternal and paternal aunts and uncles.
Richard started his education at Cuthbert School, a one-room school house in Hatfield and then continued from Grade 4 to 12 in Nokomis School. Following high school in Nokomis, Richard attended the University of Saskatchewan where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc). He financed his studies with a variety of jobs, including running a summer camp for delinquent teenage boys in northern Saskatchewan, and working and teaching for Frontier College in northern Alberta. After Convocation he worked in the oil patch in Edmonton, and travelled Canada, east to west and north. Later, he worked in Butchart Gardens, where he fell in love with British Columbia. His itchy feet took him to Europe and on the solo adventure of his life, travelling extensively throughout Africa, where he most enjoyed the Sahara.
He lived most of his life in Vancouver. He loved the people he worked with and they regarded him as family.
Richard is lovingly remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, sharp wit and the ability to see many sides of an argument, his love of Saskatchewan summers and his capacity for care and compassion. He was a gentleman and a scholar, with a keen interest in military history, especially of the Second World War. Although he would describe himself as a luddite, he used his iPad to research and read, to enjoy the music of Colter Wall, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot and Stan Rogers and for ZOOM visits with his siblings.
A memorial service for family will be held soon. Burial will be in Govan Cemetery.
If you wish, in lieu of flowers, Richard requested that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
