It is with great sadness that we announce the devastating loss of Jonas Raymond Oakes. Jonas was born in Maple Creek, December 14, 1965 and raised on Neekaneet Cree Nation.
Jonas is predeceased by his mother Josephine Oakes; father Gordon Peltier; beloved daughter Janine Rene Wesaquate-Oakes and infant son Jared; grandfather Abel Oakes; grandmother Machamo, Isabel Peltier; brothers Junior Wayne (his twin), Rainey, Glen, Oscar, Louis Oakes and Greg Littlechief; aunts Iona and Mary Oakes; uncles Gordon and Johnny Oakes. Jonas will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years Gloria; brother Clarence(Ann) Oakes; sister Linda Oakes; sons Jonas and Joseph; daughter Mecca; numerous nieces and nephews; special niece Kerri-Dawn Oakes and special nephew Randy Oakes; mother in law Noreen Wesaquate; grandchildren and great grandchildren Landen(Heather) Wesaquate, Jenelle, Dreden, Daman, Nicholas, Kreesha Littletent, Latrell Sparvier Oakes, Jayden Missens-Oakes, Jossiah, Josephine, Heavenly Cote, Joseph Jr Shingoose; great grandchildren Cassius Creely and Alicia Wesaquate- Alexson.
Jonas made his home in Regina, Sk where he went to school. He was a humble man who liked to attend Pow-Wows, camping and loved the outdoors. He had a passion for sports; particularly hockey and bodybuilding, as well as riding horses. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed carpentry and spent some time at Gabriel Construction as well as roofing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and shared many stories. Jonas recently became a great-grandfather. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a proud son, brother, uncle, friend, husband, father and grandfather. Gloria would like to send a special thanks to all those who shared in Jonas’ life and extend her gratitude to those who come out to celebrate his life and his passing. Jonas was her not just her husband, but best friend, partner and love of her life.
A public viewing will be at 2:00 pm. at Lee funeral home at 3101 Dewdney Avenue in Regina. The funeral procession will follow to Chief Payepot school, Piapot First Nation for a wake at 4:00 pm with an Elder to officiate. A funeral service will be held at Payepot school gymnasium, on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 11:00 am.
