April 5, 1935 - June 11, 2020
Al passed away peacefully, with family at his side on Thursday June 11, 2020, in Regina, SK at the age of 85 years. Al was born in Watson, SK. He was the eighth child in a family of ten children born to Martin Sr. and Maria Rey of Engelfeld, Saskatchewan. Growing up with 9 other brothers and sisters meant that the work was shared, and there was always someone around to get into mischief with, or blame, when they got caught doing mischief. In the spring of 1956 Martin and Al opened up a Macleods franchised dealer store in Cupar, SK. Two years later they added a plumbing and heating contracting business to their franchise. He was the Southern Saskatchewan representative on the Macleods Dealer Council in Winnipeg for 2 years. In 1990 the franchise was changed to Macleods True Value. In 1996 this business was sold. Al had this business for forty years. After moving to Cupar, Al met Velma Ursulan, of the Arbury district, and they were married on October 8, 1960 and raised their 3 children in Cupar. Al was involved in many different organizations, including the Cupar Volunteer Firefighters, Cupar Minor Hockey Association, Cupar District Board of Trade and the Cupar Town Council. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed travelling with Velma but most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Al and Val moved into Regina in 2006. Velma passed away in 2012, Al continued to live in his house. He moved to Queen Victoria Estates in August 2019, and enjoyed spending the time with the people and activities while he was there. He was predeceased by his wife Velma; parents, Martin and Maria Rey; brothers, Martin, Joe, Tony (Marleen), Ted; sisters, Mary, Anne (Steve Sommer) Lena (James Murray); and brother-in-law Paul Baggenstos. He is survived by his daughters, Joanne (Jim) Morgan and Karen Rey (Barry Cyca); son Garth (Gwen); grandchildren, Kim Bernakavitch (Paul), Matt Morgan (Grant), Alexander and Nickolas Rey, Mandy (Brian) Ferguson and family; Sheri Swan and family, Jonathan (Kendra) Leier, Farrah Semegen (Jonathan) and family; sisters, Beth (Wilbert) Czemeres, Margaret (Clarence) Becker; sisters-in-law, Joyce Rey and Mary Rey as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He had recently become a great-grandfather to Avery Bernakavitch. Due to Covid-19 restrictions a private family funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memoriam to Canadian Mental Health Association, Saskatchewan Division at https://sk.cmha.ca/ or mailed to CMHA Saskatchewan Division, 2702 12th Avenue Regina, SK S4T 1J2.
