Ricardo Mendoza was born in Mexico City on Friday, August 6, 1982 around 10:45 p.m. He was the youngest of the four children of Moises & Catalina Mendoza. Ricardo lived in Mexico City with his older brothers, Juan and Jose, and his sister Claudia until the short age of six-years-old. As a child he was playful, respectful, smart and very healthy.
In 1989, Ricardo, along with his mother and siblings, emigrated to the United States of America. He studied at John Gil Elementary School, McKinley Middle School and graduated from Sequoia High School. During his school years, he made many lifelong friends.
Ricardo was a big sports fan, particularly football and basketball games. This led to his huge collection of sports cards, especially of his favorite sport star, Curtis Martin. Some of his favorite teams were the 49ers and the Mexican national soccer team. Ricardo, along with his father, who he referred to as “Koy,” shared the same passion of collecting cards, beanie babies and movies.
Another one of his passions was music; he enjoyed listening to rap as well as Mexican music. Some of his favorite artists were Too Short, Wu Tang Clan, as well as Ramon Ayala & Vicente Fernandez. His love for music was so great that he became a member of the “Krookit Kings” group. This group became his family away from home up until his last dying days.
One of Ricardo’s biggest pleasures was spending time with his nieces, Cynthia, Crystal, Angelica & Alondra, in addition to his nephew Luis. He loved them as if they were his own children, there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them; he pleased them in every way possible to him. He made sure to be present at every special moment for his family. His nieces and nephew will always remember him as their Uncle “Calo”. Ricardo also demonstrated care for Ivette Perez and Aaliyah Andino, whom he loved just as much as his nieces.
Ricardo was the Recruiting Manager for the call center at Tragon. His co-workers have described him as a very hard working and dedicated employee and said he was an example to follow. He was a tough but fair boss; he treated everyone he came in contact with respectfully. He looked forward to going back to work; he had so many plans he wanted to implement that would not only benefit the company, but make it a much better work place for his employees.
No matter where he was, he made friends. He was better known as “Rick” to all of his friends, who described him as a person with a heart of gold. Rick was the type of guy who would take the shirt off his back to give it to any friend in need. There were no obstacles when it came to his friends; he loved spending time with them and they always brought him so much joy and happiness.
On December 6, 2011, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. As hard and painful as the news was to him, he did not allow this to break down his spirit; on the contrary, it motivated him to take better care of himself in every way possible. During the months of treatment he underwent, he never once lost his sense of humor. Ricardo kept on living his life to the fullest and enjoying every minute of it, he never lost hope of beating cancer. This past Father’s Day was the last family reunion he enjoyed.
On June 18, 2012, Ricardo was admitted into the hospital to have his bone marrow transplant, which was very successful. Unfortunately, after the transplant, there were complications that were out of the Doctor’s control and this was what led to him passing away on July 23, 2012.
His mother will always remember him and will cherish his memory in her heart every day of her life. Ricardo is no longer in any pain and has now reunited in Heaven with his father and grandmothers. Just like his mother, his family members and friends look forward to the day they will see him again. Until then, we will all remember him with lots of happiness and love.
